Ozoni

Ozoni

Ozoni is a soup with rice cake traditionally eaten in Japan on New Year’s Day. While people might often associate "mochi" with desserts, for Japanese people, mochi symbolizes New Year celebrations. Although recipes vary by family and region, the basic Ozoni is made with simple ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • Chicken broth: 600 ml
  • Vegetables of your choice (traditionally carrots, daikon radish, shiitake mushrooms, etc.)
  • Plain mochi rice cakes (non-flavored)

How to Make:

  1. Cook the vegetables of your choice in the chicken broth until tender.
  2. Toast or roast the plain mochi rice cakes until they puff up and turn golden brown (usually 5-6 minutes in a 180°C/356°F oven). Alternatively, you can cook the mochi directly in the broth, but this may make the soup cloudy.
  3. Place the toasted/roasted mochi rice cakes in a soup bowl. Pour the hot broth with the cooked vegetables over the mochi.
  4. Enjoy your homemade Ozoni!
