Saegusa Sotaro (1911-2006) / Metal

The sculptor Saegusa Sotaro (1911–2006) was born on Shodoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture. After graduating from the Tokyo Fine Arts School’s Department of Sculpture in 1935, he worked as an instructor at Yokkaichi Municipal Technical School in Mie Prefecture while actively exhibiting his works at the Nitten Exhibition and the Shinkozo-sha Exhibition. From 1970 onward, he served as an associate professor and later a professor at Nagoya University of the Arts. 

Many large bronze statues remain across various locations in his hometown of Kagawa. He is also known for his ”Eto Series," a collection of sculptures that symbolically represent the twelve animals of the zodiac.
