The Selflessness Child is a motif that originally appeared in a painting by Yokoyama Taikan titled Muga (Selflessness), in which the highest Zen ideal is expressed not through the image of monks, but through a child. Since then, the Selflessness Child has become a popular motif in other forms of art, including metalwork.
